If I had a written out bucket list (I really must do that) completing a trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu would definitely be on there.
Luckily, when I was in Peru, I got to do just that.
The Inca Trail consists of three overlapping trails: Mollepata, Classic, and One Day.
Our group was completing the One Day Trail, starting from Chachabamba and heading past Winay Wayna to complete the trek at Machu Picchu.
I’ve mentioned it before – I’m not particularly athletic.
I’m not sedentary, no, just more in the “average” category than the “fit” category.
So needless to say there was a lot of huffing and puffing on my end during the day hike.
It was certainly a happy day for me though – it was a great opportunity to bond with some of my tour mates: Walking along chatting our respective lives, sharing iPod music, and taking in the beautiful views together.
It really was quite an all-around fantastic for me – completing a huge task and feeling accomplished for that; seeing an amazing part of the world and feeling awe for that; and making memories with some wonderful new friends and feeling joyous for that.
I already knew that this experience would go “down in the books” for me (Hey, I was TREKKING THE INCA TRAIL) but it became an overwhelmingly exciting experience for me for more than just that part of it.
I will forever look back on this day with such fond memories, shared with beautiful new friends.
