How we spent just £150 on nappies: Benefits of cloth

Before I even got pregnant I knew I wanted to use cloth nappies with my children.

As an environmentally conscious person who had already been using reusable options in other areas of my life for years, it just made sense to follow the reusable route with a baby too.

Plus, they are cheaper (or can be – more on that below) and are SO much cuter!

Today I wanted to share with you how we spent just £150 on our nappy kit that will last our now-six month old baby until she potty trains, as well as talk about the benefits of cloth nappies, and discuss the overall costs involved when taking into account electricity and water usage.

5 Things To Do During Coronavirus Isolation

Lockdown Isolation

Coronavirus Self Isolation, Lockdown, Quarantine – Whatever level of official measures your country is at in regards to the COVID-19 outbreak, the message is fairly clear: Stay at home.

But staying at home can be a problem for many. Not physically, that’s easy – just stay at home! No, it’s the mental side of things that can get a bit hard. We humans are social creatures, and we’re not used to staying cooped up in the one place for too long these days.

Here in the UK, we’re on lockdown, only allowed to leave our house for a short time each day for exercise, and to get groceries approximately once a week. Apart from that (in our household, anyway), we’re at home, as I am on maternity leave currently and my fiancé is working from home.

The urge to stay in pyjamas all day and watch one mindless Netflix show after the next, day in and day out, grows stronger and stronger for us all in isolation. However that can just feed into a negative mental health cycle that’s then hard to break free from. So let’s discuss some of the ways you can try to avoid a complete swan dive into depression during COVID-19 isolation.

Nursery Tour! Our secondhand, towards zero waste set up

I thought I’d show you around what we’ve got set up for baby’s “nursery”.

I say “nursery” tentatively because really all their ‘stuff’ is stored in our spare room whilst baby will be sleeping in our room for the first six months at least anyway.

For us, lowering our waste and environmental impact is really important, so this comes into the set up a lot – from all the secondhand purchases we made over buying new where we could, to our cloth nappy stash that we hope to use from birth, we’ve tried our hardest to make bringing a child into this world as low-impact as we can (but, of course, we know there is always room for improvement!).

Low Impact shopping at Bristol’s first Zero Waste store

Like many other South-West UK zero-wasters, I was delighted to hear about the opening of Zero Green in Bristol recently.

The gorgeous and green shop was opened by two passionate women, Lidia and Stacey, who said:

“Zero Green came about for two reasons; firstly, we were both becoming frustrated about how much packaging there is on everyday items and our understanding of how much damage plastic, and specifically single use plastic, was doing to our planet. Secondly, we realised that if we wanted to see something done about it we would have to do it ourselves!

DSC_0055
Our earth is beautiful, yes, and if you want to keep enjoying it the way we are today, you’re going to have to make some better choices right now.

This week, you have the opportunity – placed right in front of you, on a silver platter, without even moving from your comfortable spot on the lounge – to make a difference for our earth.

Earth Hour is set to take place between 8.30-9.30pm (local time) this Saturday, March 24.

If you haven’t heard of Earth Hour before, it is an initiative set up by the WWF. The first ever Earth Hour occurred in Sydney in 2007, and spread around the world in the following years.

10 tips to help you start moving towards a Zero Waste lifestyle

DSC_0015

About nine months ago I first heard the term “Zero Waste”.

I had seen TED talks by Lauren Singer of Trash is for Tossers and Bea Johnson from the Zero Waste Home, and became instantly hooked on the idea of a life creating as little waste as possible.

I began researching at every opportunity this “zero waste lifestyle” idea, and began implementing what I’d learnt into my life.

I became extraordinarily passionate about the topic, and talked to my friends and family about it as often as I could.

Now, after having been on this path for a while, I feel ready to share what I’ve learnt with you all.

Environmental wake up call: Eden Project, Cornwall

dsc_0307

The environment is a topic of conversation very close to my heart.

I was always involved with the “green” groups at high school, and went on to continue those interest groups in the years after.

I’ve taken many steps myself to reduce my impact on the environment, and I care a lot about protecting our planet from destruction.

Therefore it was a no-brainer that I would visit the Eden Project while I was in Cornwall, England.
